Main Street and Bicentennial Park Lighting

The presently planned scenario for a 4-foot tall, 2 light set-up atop a 12 foot tall pole is broken down into at least three phases:

  1. The first would be to install three 2-light/pole set-ups in the Bicentennial Park (mini park) planter beds in the area of existing lighting connections in place but not used in recent years.  Assuming the Park fixtures meet and/or exceed expectations and public approval, phase two is introduced
  2. Second phase would be to install lighting at the bridge sites at both ends of Main Street plus the newly renovated bridge on Depot Street.  Pole height would probably be less but would depend on where situated at each bridge.
  3. Phase 3 would include the installation of similar styled street lighting on the opposite side of the current Main Street lights.  The existing lighting needs to remain in place (due to varied rules including telephone/cable usage) but would not be turned on … our new lights would become the lighting for the downtown area … now lower and more appealing and attractive to the eye.

Two lights have been installed on Main Street, one green and one black, two different styles to determine which is preferred.

Aurora” designed by King Luminaire in Jefferson, Ohio, was selected following the “Dark Sky Friendly” guidelines and recommendations outlined on the Outdoor Lighting Manual for Vermont Municipalities and the New England Light Pollution Advisory Group.

 It has the following characteristics:

- Safety:  meets all codes and ordinates for pedestrians and motorists

- Glare: minimizes glare

- Uplight: all light is directed downwards, no light trespass

- Design:  selected by most as best choice

- Cost and Maintenance:  best quote received, easy to maintain

- Power usage:  uses as few assemblies as is practicable

37 lights and arms are to be shipped around 11/23 with delivery expected in following 2 weeks.  They will be stored at a local facility for easy access – Ludlow Electric Company will install the arms and lights as time permits; hopefully, some will be up before December holidays.   Below is illustrated the proposed location for the 37 lights (red dots).  Red dots with blue lines will be installed next year.

Planting Updates

It was agreed to order approximately $120.00 worth of Instant Bloom bulbs from the Gurney’s catalogue. They will be planted in the boxes at the Town Hall and possibly in the whisky barrels at the mini park to add instant blooms and color to a visible area. Post-bloom, they will be replaced with annual plantings and the bulbs will be replanted elsewhere (discussed several possibilities, including around the bases of the trees in the gazebo park) to bloom next spring

In October, 400 daffodil bulbs were planted at the Ludlow Welcome Sign on the Ludlow/Cavendish town line, at Fletcher Farm.

Special thanks to Kevin Kuntz for building flower boxes for the bridges.  They were installed and planted in the summer, and then mums were planted in the fall.  Thanks to Patsy Kuntz, Cecilia McMillen, Dianne Krupp and Barb Whittaker for the bridge plantings.

Town Improvement

Two park benches with a Ludlow imprint on them were ordered as well as 5 dome style covers for the trash receptacles in town.
